Just as the bear swung its arm forward, the man felt something hit the back of his legs. He fell back, and could do nothing but watch as the bear's paw swung, just barely missing his chest.

The man crashed to the ground, his impact somewhat tempered by the soft mulch. His legs hung in the air, raised up by the log that had saved him, at least temporarily, from being mauled by the bear.

Seemingly scared by sudden appearance of the log, the bear came down on all fours, parallel to the log. He moved as if to continue his attack of the man, but then, seemingly thinking better of it, simply lumbered away.

The man remained on the ground for a few moments, partly to make sure the bear was gone, and partly to recover from his sudden fall. As he gazed up above, dazed, he saw a bird flying away from a gash in a nearby tree. He wondered if the log at his feet had somehow come from the tree, and if the bird had been the one who'd trilled just before he saw the bear.

Deciding he could now stand up, the man shakily got to his feet, dusted himself off, and dazedly started his way home. He'd had plenty enough excitement for one day.
